Two separate licences for wet areas in NSW

In NSW, wall and floor tiling over $5,000 is licensed work, and waterproofing is a separate licence class. In a bathroom, that means the membrane under the tiles must be done by someone licensed for waterproofing — the tiler may hold both, or a separate waterproofer may do it first. Ask who does each stage and for the waterproofing certificate.

Common questions

Can a Sydney tiler also do the waterproofing?
Only if they hold a NSW licence that covers waterproofing as well as tiling. Check both on Service NSW, or have a licensed waterproofer do the membrane before tiling.
Can new tiles go over old tiles?
Sometimes, if the existing tiles are sound and the added height will not cause problems at doors, drains or fixtures. Ask the tiler to inspect the surface first.
Who handles waterproofing in a bathroom?
Waterproofing is a separate stage beneath the tiles. Confirm who is responsible for it and what documentation you will receive before the tiler covers it.
